Thoughts on New Year

So the year 2010 draws to an end and here we go again, looking starry-eyedly at a brand new year as if it is going to be dramatically different from the outgoing one, and all for the better, of course.
I’ve never been big on celebrating New Years Eve (I even play down my birthday except for some extra prayers thrown in). So this year it isn’t going to be different unless I’m dragged out of the house. I do wish Happy New Year to everyone I bump into at least in the first week of Jan, but it is more after fashion than anything else.
Now don’t brand me a pessimist or a wet blanket. Because I am not. I really marvel at the enthusiasm people can muster on such occasions, but I wonder if they wake up and find the first morning of January any different from the night before. Not that I begrudge their joy or optimism, it’s just that I seem to find nothing momentous attached to one particular day of the year.
As for resolutions, well, when I used to be a naive young thing, I used to make them every year about various self-improvement “projects” like being regular with exercise, getting more organised and so on, until I realised the foolishness of it. Nowadays I believe firmly in the cliché -- ‘no resolution is the best resolution’. If you badly want to do/start something you wouldn’t wait for the New Year.
Having said that, 2011 promises to be different. I do feel that it’s bringing a lot of good things my way. Only time will tell whether I am right or not.
So here’s wishing you all a great New Year. May all of you be peaceful and happy.
So long.

  1. You sound like my husband. We din't go for any "honeymoon" trip, bcoz he said, everyday from today is honeymoon (think it's romantic?...nah!). He doesn't believe in gifts for anniversaries or bdays either. He says every day is special, so if you feel like buying something, just buy it, don't wait for that day to arrive! He'd rather wait for promotions & offers to get better deals:)

I like the idea of a few special days, feels good to celebrate with family & friends, a tiny break from our otherwise mundane lives - working our butts-off! I don't believe in New Year resolutions - I subscribe to your viewpoint there!

All said and done, here's wishing you & your family a very happy new year!

  4. I get all exited about birthdays and special days. There are very few new years eve I play low key. Festivities and celebrations are what keeps my otherwise mundane life exiting.

New years resolutions - I agree with you.

  5. Hi Neena,

Many things you have said about parties and resolutions are right but then youngster still go for parties and make resolutions.Perhaps as they grow older they will slowly understand the futility of all.

All days are good days or all days are bad days depending on the outlook of the person.A pessimist will look at each day with diffidence and despair where as an optimist will look at the brighter side of things.

Well, let me take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful new year filled with happiness, peace and prosperity.

  6. That is one way of looking at it.
There is no single way of doing anything. There are no two ways either.

But then, dont you think life would be monotonous without special days ?

  8. I believe in celebrating every occasion I can. Everyday cannot be special. Life sees a lot of ups and downs. Its good to be able to use these occasions as excuses to mingle with people and forget the problems of the world. Its kind of an intoxication for teetotalers like me. :)

    Happy New Year. :)
